We want everyone to be able to browse and shop on islandmist.com, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification or other assistive technology.
Our goal
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the widely used standard for making websites work for people with disabilities. We haven’t met it everywhere yet: below is what we’ve checked and what we know still needs work.
What we’ve done
We built the site with accessibility in mind. In October 2026 we reviewed it against WCAG 2.2 AA on a computer and a phone screen: we used every page with a keyboard alone, ran automated checks, and measured color contrast, including text over photos. We fixed what we found, apart from the issues below.
As a result, you can use the site with a keyboard alone and see where you are as you go. A link at the top of each page skips to the main content. Images have text descriptions, form fields have labels, and the pages work when zoomed in or on a small screen without scrolling sideways.
What we know still needs work
Most of these come from WooCommerce, the software our shop runs on, and we’re following them up:
- In the full-screen photo viewer on a product page, the row of thumbnails can’t be scrolled with the keyboard, and closing the viewer with Escape doesn’t return you to where you were. You can browse a product’s photos with the arrow keys without opening the viewer.
- A product’s sizes don’t respond to the arrow keys. Use Tab to move between them and Space to choose one.
- At checkout, when a field needs correcting, the page moves you to it and shows the message under it, but some screen readers may not read the message out.
- The cart panel that slides out has no name for screen readers. Its heading, “Your cart”, comes straight after its Close button.
- In address forms, the search box inside the country and state lists has no label for screen readers, though the lists themselves do.
- Some text sits over photographs. We’ve checked its contrast on the photos we use, and check again when photos change.
We haven’t yet tested the site with a screen reader on a phone or computer, or tested the card and PayPal payment forms, which Square and PayPal provide.
